Manufacturer Description: Wolman® DuraStain® One Coat Semi-Transparent Stain is a one-coat, water-based exterior wood stain designed to provide excellent color retention; adhesion; and protection against UV graying, water damage, and mildew. It delivers superior beauty and protection in one coat. In addition, it offers semi-transparent hide coverage over new or previously coated and weathered wood.
Wolman’s DuraStain looked terrible when applying. It literally looks like orange paint. The product also has a strong odor. Initial appearance is not really a semi-transparent look, but more “thin paint” semi-opaque, hides quite a bit of the look and grain of the wood. 14 month weathering did show good results in maintaining color and appearance and this would be expected based on the paint-like consistency of the product. Bottom line, the results were disappointing for a stain that has 6 year guaranteed performance on decks.

We stained our deck last year in August with Wolman Duralast and now this year the stain is coming off in numerous places and looks like _____.

I applied Durastain to natural cedar clapboard siding as a way to preserve the wood, eliminate the graying that usually occurs and retain the original color as best as possible. It was also necessary to stand up to the harsh winters of the Mass. Berkshires. For best results, it had to be applied with a brush for maximum penetration and coverage and must be stirred regularly to insure the pigments are effectively mixed with the oil base.
The product has outperformed my expectations. After 7 years the color is still like original and continues to effectively shed water. There has been no graying, darkening, peeling or mildewing. It has not been adversely affected by strong sunlight exposure. I would highly recommend this product
