Horrible! Plain and simple! Hard to apply without lines. Cannot walk on it for days, started fading after 2 months, and has almost completely peeled off within 6 months! This was all new dried redwood lumber! It didn’t need cleaned, sanded or prepped! It’s very expensive and it’s not worth lifting it off the shelf! We’ve spent over $2,000.00 on this product just so we can take off all the facia, handrails, ballisters, and hardware, to sand a brand new deck and start all over again! I will be forwarding all of this to consumer affairs, and the B.B.B.. so hopefully others won’t get burned like we did. I’ve also got lots of before and after pictures that are time and location stamped, as well as receipts showing the purchase dates of both, the lumber and the deck stain seal from Cabot
I purchased 2 gallons of Cabot stain for my deck. I put 2 coats on the deck the middle of last summer and it has already chipped down to the bare wood.
redwood needs no stain or anything —it is good natural for years– the redwood lumber may have seemed “dry” but it can hold moister for a long time and never rot. strip it and/ or clean it and see if you don’t like the look in a year or two.
Applied semi transparent stain after following directions for prep. Looked good until after 1st winter. Deck peeling. Thought we had made a mistake so reprepped & restained. After winter, deck peeling again. This stain may work if you live in a warm climate but NOT if you get snow & cold weather. Cabot wants receipts for purchases. Lowes customer service will not help with providing receipts even though receipts are in their system. Hundreds of dollars lost with this product & hitting brick walls trying to recover losses.
I have been staining decks for over 25 years and this is the first time that I have ever had a problem with peeling. I always power wash the decks and wait at least two full days before applying stains. Cabot solid stain is a waste of money, but worst is the amount of time spent prepping and staining. Now I have to buy a different stain and spend another 5 hours re-staining my deck. I will be contacting the BBB to complain about this worthless product. I called Cabot and the guy blamed me for their crappy product. I wish I had checked all the reviews most are bad on different websites.
I am also very dissapointed with this stain. It remains very slippery even after 3 weeks. I am afraid to walk on my porch for fear of slipping. It also left a residue on our shoes and now our interior floors have slippery spots on them. I wish we’d never wasted our time and money on this product. I’m not sure how to get the slipperyness to go away.
this semi solid “stain” did not penetrate anywhere on our decks, we built a total of 50′ x 16′ of decking with three stairways, we waited one year for the wood to dry properly, I did a splash test, and then applied two coats of this cabot semi solid stain. in less than one year it was peeling and it looks identical to latex paint. I have been calling CABOT for over three weeks to try to get a resolution and they keep saying they will send me an email and they don’t. The woman I spoke with today made sure to interrupt me repeatedly and tell me that I need to do a splash test and make sure that the wood is not “delaminating”. I have been staining wood for 30 years, it is not rocket science. it will take me a long time to carefully strip this trash off and put a good staying down because there are extensive railing and stairway sections. this product did not penetrate and it sure as hell is not “stain”.
